Pre-Natal
pilates should be started before becoming pregnant if possible. While it is safe to begin a new
exercise routine during pregnancy it is important to check with your midwife or obstetrician
first as pregnancies are different from one woman to the
next. It is great for moms-to-be to continue to exercise (with
caution), but only up to what they were accustomed to doing before pregnancy.
It is important to exercise to stay fit during pregnancy, but with
moderation. Pregnancy is NOT the time for intensive fitness training!!!
Exercise has many proven benefits for mothers as well as their babies. If
you are planning to become pregnant start pilates now. The benefits are
endless!

If
you are looking to begin an exercise program during pregnancy
it is best to begin slowly. A great way to begin exercising during
pregnancy is to start with walking up to 30 minutes per day. Walking is a
safe total body workout that also gets circulation flowing. Pilates should
also begin slowly if it has been some time since you exercised before
pregnancy. It may be a good idea to schedule a private session if
beginning during pregnancy so you will have your instructor's undivided
attention.
It is best to learn pilates basic principles and essential exercises while you can safely flex your
upper body off of the floor and gain abdominal strength. You will have the added benefit of using your
inner most abdominal muscles that you conditioned prior to pregnancy when it comes time
for delivery. Your Pilates program can be modified for you through each tri-mester.
Exercise after 27 weeks of pregnancy should shorten in duration and intensity as
your joints become looser and energy decreases. As well as this joints are
still quite mobile and soft up to 3-5 months postpartum so ease back into your
pilates routine with caution! Pilates is a great way to prepare your body for delivering your baby as
well as getting back to your prenatal body afterward.
