There is no other form of strength training exercise that compares to pilates by increasing flexibility and range of motion while also building lean muscle mass. Pilates educates you about your body by increasing muscle control and improving posture. It is the perfect cross-training technique to complement your cardio exercise. It teaches you proper form to maximize efficiency in any physical activity whether it be cycling, boxing, running, swimming, gymnastics, dance etc. Pilates is NOT cardio exercise. This means you will NOT lose a lot of weight by doing pilates alone. You will lose inches if you combine your pilates program with cardio training and a balanced diet. You will not leave a class dripping with sweat when you are new to pilates. As your strength improves and the class pace picks up you will burn more calories per class. Pilates is about quality form of each exercise thereby improving posture which leads to better overall muscle tone. Pilates IS wonderful for rehab for back pain and many other conditions such as Scoliosis, spinal disc issues, osteoporosis and more . It is NOT recommended to begin pilates for or with an injury. It IS recommended to check with your doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor to be sure it is safe to begin a pilates program.
